Two Awesome Hours

Two Awesome Hours Have you ever had one of those days? You have one thing massive you have to do â€" prepare for an important presentation, create an overview for a critical report, or prepare for a difficult meeting. You realize it’s the most important factor on your to-do list right now (maybe for the whole week), however the day just will get away from you. First, you sit all the way down to “answer simply a couple of emails.” The subsequent time you lookup, and hour has flown by. Then a colleague steps in to ask “a quick question.” That eats up another 20 minutes. Then you get referred to as into a meeting that lasts 45 minutes and doesn't accomplish anything. Before you know it, half your day is gone, and also you haven’t touched your priority project. That’s the main target of Two Awesome Hours by Josh Davis. He tackles the tough topic of how to get things carried out as a human being. Machines are a lot extra efficient, he says. “Computers and machines don’t get drained, so the quality of work is equivalent each time they are used. Using them extra regularly will only result in larger productiveness and efficiency. But, after all, we’re not computers or machines. We are biological creatures. Continually demanding one kind of workâ€"and a consistent degree of effectivenessâ€"from our brains is like regularly demanding the same pace from a runner under any circumstancesâ€"whether or not sprinting or competing in a marathon, or whether running with no sleep after fasting for a day, jogging after recovering from a hangover, or exercising after being fed and rested.” In different phrases, we’ve received our work reduce out for us. The excellent news is,, we shouldn’t try to keep at most productivity for long durations. Davis writes that making an attempt to be environment friendly on a regular basis will block us from harnessing the huge potential we now have for inventive considering. Instead, we should always goal for 2 productive hours at a time at maximum effectivity. Then, we should always take a break and transfer on to something else. Any time after two hours is probably wasted. That’s the excellent news. The bad information is we’re really bad at managing even two productive hours in a workday. Davis writes about science-based principles for channeling your productiveness so you will get the most important issues done. He spends a lot of time on choice factors: those micro moments between tasks where we are able to keep functioning on automatic pilot or take a second to decide, purposefully and mindfully, what to do subsequent. Autopilot probably takes us on to the following e mail or telephone message without considering. Our brains are remarkably efficient; we are able to complete a whole grooming routine, drive home, or routine business process with out a lot aware thought. “Much of what we do every day is automatic and guided by behavior, requiring little aware awareness, and that’s not a ba d thing…. Once you started answering e-mails, the neural routines started operating and also you couldn’t stop till something snapped you out of it,” Davis writes. We waste plenty of productive time because we don’t notice it passing, Davis says. “Hurrying by way of one decision levelâ€"in between tasksâ€"might save 5 minutes. Starting on the mistaken task might cost an hour. But the five minutes hurts extra as a result of we’re so conscious of each second, whereas during the lost hour we’re totally on autopilot, so it hurts much less.” The key to more effectiveness is to coach your self to recognize your determination factors and snap your self out of autopilot mode. Take a second to decide what task is most necessary to do at that moment. Davis writes, “Being intentional about what you propose to do instantly after you finish a task makes all of the distinction on the planet in terms of how nicely you use whatever amount of time you could have in entrance of you. ” Published by candacemoody Candace’s background consists of Human Resources, recruiting, training and evaluation. 5 Ways To Structure Your Networking Pitch

5 Ways To Structure Your Networking Pitch In my newest post for Money and Time, I cover 5 methods to construction your networking pitch. Here is the unedited model: If you’re looking for a brand new job, starting or growing your small business, or even just trying to broaden your network inside your current firm, you'll need to satisfy new folks. How will you introduce yourself? You want to be temporary, but additionally leave sufficient info that you pique the listener’s interest. Here are 5 ways to introduce or “pitch” your self at an expert conference, association mixer, or even a social event where other professionals might be: Start with a shared expertise If you’re at a wedding, open with how you know the couple. If you’re at a conference, open along with your affiliation to the organizer or your curiosity within the topic. If it’s a company mixer, point out your role, department or years at the firm. From this shared experience, you possibly can share elements of your background that build from there. Bu t you could have already constructed rapport by beginning with what you could have in common. This is nice for a career changer who may not need to related himself with the function or firm he no longer desires Tell a client story Instead of just itemizing your title and company, discuss who you serve: I’m an accountant with We Love Taxes. I prepare taxes for retail corporations, mom and pop companies, circus performers….The more specific the higher. You can even drill down to at least one specific story: I am working with a retail store proprietor who came to us with a laundry bag filled with receipts, invoices and different papers, and I created an electronic system that can now be accessed on her cellphone. The consumer story is particularly helpful when you’re a business proprietor and wish to leave your listener with a clear concept of your worth however with no gross sales pitch. Use a earlier than/ after construction The laundry bag full of papers to a streamlined syste m in your telephone isn't just a consumer story, but in addition a before/ after story. The earlier than/ after could be a consumer’s result but it may also be what you delivered to your role or department: I manage logistics for We Love Mail. The company used to spend over $1 MM on delivery prices, and my group figures out how to cut that cost in half. Focus on your expertise This is the most traditional pitch in that you just summarize the arc of your profession â€" trade specialty, years of expertise, and/or position you play: I’ve been in advertising most of my profession â€" client products, luxury, and now retail. I work in direct mail or social media or brand administration…This is a dependable way of introducing your self, and when you hold it concise, you’ll share a wealthy quantity of data. One drawback is that many people use this pitch so that you threat getting forgotten, especially in a crowded occasion like a conference the place individuals are continuously meeting new people. That similar marketer might have stated: I am the social media strategist for We Love Books. I construct a neighborhood for booklovers to find our store on-line; OR We had a reasonably dormant Facebook page three years ago when I began so I put us on YouTube, Pinterest, and Facebook and now we a third of our customers hear about us first on-line. Get private Most pitches rightly include skilled history or accomplishments or results because people do anticipate this, so it’s a respectable chance to share this. But an introduction is really in regards to the begin of a relationship. The skilled sharing may come after. You may strive sharing something private first â€" where you grew up, a cherished pastime, a side project you’re at present engaged on. If the private nuggets engenders a genuine rapport and an opportunity to talk again later then it’s a good pitch to use. You would possibly mix it with the shared expertise: I’m a pal of the bride. We went to highschool collectively â€" elementary really. I grew up in St. Louis and didn’t come to NYC until well after school… Ideally, you create, then mix and match all of those pitches. You decide which to use based on the scenario. You experiment, and use those that seem to resonate the most effective. You frequently add â€" new shopper tales, new before/ after outcomes, new ways to summarize your profession, new private tidbits to share. Ask Dana The Top 3 list of references bloopers that individuals make The Top 3 list of qualifications bloopers that individuals make Question Im in my last year of my lords degree and will be re-doing my list of qualifications. What are the top list of references bloopers that individuals make? What are your recommendations to fix â€" or keep away from â€" them? Answer from Executive Job Coach Dana Manciagli Blunder No. 1: Misunderstanding the motivation behind a list of references It is basically a flawless, simple to-peruse sequential synopsis of your abilities, encounters and victories â€" that's it. Employment applicants incorporate an excessive amount of superfluous data, similar to organization subtleties or everyday assignments. However they miss featuring the key aptitudes that an employing chief or enrollment specialist is searching for. Peruse the set of working responsibilities for which you are applying and guarantee the catchphrases utilized there are likewise found in your list of qualifications. Mistake No. 2: Poor configuration or design makes list of references hard to peruse While there is nobody right format, locate a simple to-peruse design on the web and tail it. Why Self Belief is Essential for Career Success

Why Self Belief is Essential for Career Success Not very far in the past I gave a discourse to youngsters who as of late got their GSCE's and A Level outcomes, there were additionally a couple of grown-ups in the crowd fit to be propelled. At the point when I was more youthful I never used to ask or answer any inquiries when I was befuddled or didn't get something. I didn't shout out. Being an extremely tranquil and modest individual was my greatest shortcoming. Believe in yourself I used to go unnoticed by instructors, football trainers and any other person who might help me in my profession way. A substantially more certain individual currently obviously, that I give persuasive addresses to individuals of different ages. I generally endeavor to draw in and include the crowd and not really single out the individuals who I feel to be a greater amount of a self observer, however I like to get everybody talking and tuning in to not only myself, as I accept everybody has a remarkable story and something to share. This discussion was a little unique and one I will definitely recall. Over that everybody has an ability and ought to be pleased with that ability and let the world think about their ability. I asked the crowd 'Who has an ability?' I sat tight for 30 seconds attempting to look at everybody. Nobody reacted I saw a couple of smiles and lips move yet it appeared as though none of them accepted or were certain if what they were acceptable at could be considered as an ability. I accept everybody has an ability and you ought to trust you are the best at what you do and the manner in which you do it is exceptional in contrast with any other person. Be glad of your gifts I circumvented the room and asked everybody independently what you are acceptable at. Answers fluctuated from fixing vehicles, sound designers, football, b-ball, moving, sewing (this originated from a more seasoned part in the crowd) and story composing. A few things I can't do myself. I let them know whether you don't trust you are the best at what you do or if nothing else who you are going up against at that specific time you will never accomplish your objectives in life. You need to wake up and reveal to yourself you are the best. At the point when you are on that football pitch or b-ball court, you have to disclose to yourself you are superior to everybody on the contrary group. Be that as it may, here is the wind. Try not to attempt to be the following Ronaldo, Henry or Messi, Dwayne Wade or Lebron James. Or on the other hand on the off chance that you are in the music business don't attempt to be the following Kanye West or Beyoncé. Or then again design, don't attempt to be the following Alexandre McQueen. Try and be the best form of YOU that YOU can be. Dont feel debilitated by dismissal Most of the youngsters I addressed that day have presumably never experienced dismissal, and should be set up by guides or speakers such as myself, they need enough fearlessness to manage it when it happens. I was sure enough to prop up with my pursuit of employment in desire that the correct job for me would tag along. Thump backs, set backs will happen consistently in life how you manage them is insubordinately what will make you. After the discussion I was asked how youngsters might persuade bosses to face a challenge and recruit them. I said they were additionally youthful and searching for a vocation once as well, they can identify, yet you have to give them it is a hazard worth taking. In the event that you are to view top meeting tips no uncertainty you will see, 'Act naturally'. As I said don't attempt to be the following Beyoncé or Messi, be YOU! Be positive about yourself and your ability, your enthusiasm for whatever industry you need to be a piece of and leave your imprint on it. You should have the option to exhibit your ability to advance and learn. Safe is Risky. [Image Credit: Shutterstock]

Employees Found to Expect Flexible Scheduling but Doubt its Value

Representatives Found to Expect Flexible Scheduling yet Doubt its Value Workers Found to Expect Flexible Scheduling yet Doubt its Value Representatives were found to accept that the prime inspiration for the move was situated in business concerns as opposed to profiting workers. Over portion of respondents said the most widely recognized explanation behind the notoriety of adaptable work booking was effectiveness and profitability while 12 percent said more prominent adaptability was an aftereffect of a longing to assist representatives with bettering deal with their outstanding task at hand and hours worked. This discernment seems to have extraordinarily added to representatives positioning adaptable functioning as on the 6th most significant advantage offered to workers. Respondents positioned a few business benefits dependent on significance: 25 days of excursion (40 percent); Organization annuity plan (29 percent); Yearly reward plan (24 percent); Cell phones (18 percent); Protection (16 percent); and Adaptable working hours (12 percent). A sex isolate was distinguished that demonstrated ladies were almost certain than men to accept adaptable working timetables was an indispensable business advantage, estimated at 16 percent and 9 percent, individually. Stephen Menko, Director of Ortus UK stated, These discoveries propose HR experts have a challenging situation to deal with in persuading staff regarding the general benefits of adaptable working. The business case is evident as it takes into consideration effectiveness reserve funds on office costs and more noteworthy yield. In any case, the advantage to the person of a superior work-life balance and less time and cash spent driving are, maybe shockingly, positioned low, and perhaps HR needs to pass on this savvy advantage in an all the more convincing way. Broad adaptable working could be a seismic move in the manner work is directed and it is that uncommon mammoth a change that benefits everybody. Staff [members] simply should be persuaded of this point, or if nothing else have it raised on their radar as an advantage they can ask for.

Do You Have a Lack of Internal Applicants for Managerial Roles

Do You Have a Lack of Internal Applicants for Managerial Roles Do you place inner employment ads for administrative jobs inside your business, trusting that a considerable lot of your high-potential specialists will apply? Do you locate that a significant number of them take a gander at the promotion, proceed onward, and neglect to apply? More terrible despite everything, do these equivalent laborers protest about absence of profession improvement or even leave to take up administrative jobs at different organizations? In the event that you perceive this circumstance, there might be a picture issue or a real issue with the center administration involvement with your firm that is adversely affecting your capacity to draw in inside ability. A lack of inner ability will scratch your serious edge, as studies show that inside recruits perform better, cost less, and are more productive than outside recruits. On the off chance that you find that staff have a veritable dread of the board in your business, you can't bear to overlook the issue. You might be supported by the information that you are not the only one in this predicament: according to a CareerBuilder Survey, 52 percent of laborers dont need to move into the board and are doing fine and dandy in their present job. This implies, at any rate to a limited extent, you might be up to speed in a more extensive enemy of the board pattern, one that possibly originates from the prominent disappointments in the executives seen during the ongoing monetary emergency. By and by, you do need to make a move to overcome this aversion toward the executives â€" on the off chance that it exists in your business â€" if you are to understand the maximum capacity of your workforce. I have recognized a few procedures that can assist you with exciting your workforce and reconnect top performers with the vocation stepping stool in your business. 1. Evacuate the Fear of Failure Dont play Chutes and Ladders. The danger of disappointment is a significant obstruction that keeps numerous workers from focusing on administrative jobs. High-performing employees can move into the board positions, fail spectacularly rapidly, and wind up hurled out without a parachute. It doesnt must be like this. Show laborers that bombed administrators are not catapulted from the association unceremoniously, however are treated with deference and given the alternative and backing to move sideways or downwards to a job where they can be a star once more. Let staff individuals know theres a parachute and a delicate landing if the administration profession isnt directly for them. 2. Recruit More Dissatisfied People The CareerBuilder review referenced above shows that laborers who are happy with what they have tend not to go for the stars. Theres nothing amiss with that: its a solid attitude and a substantial pathway to internal harmony, regardless of whether it isnt resolutely entrepreneur. However, having too many fulfilled sorts will hurt your ability pipeline. Investigate the employing procedure and begin to swing the parity a little for recruiting increasingly goal-oriented and disappointed competitors. 3. Employment Sharing and Four-Day Management Roles Another big reason why individuals dont need to oversee is the observation that theyll need to forfeit their work-life equalization and begin placing in 50-hour work filled weeks. Would you be able to attempt a management work sharing project, or assemble three-multi day low maintenance the executives alternatives that make it superfluous for representatives to sacrifice work-life balance when they become directors? 4. Plan Employees for the Transition Numerous specialists come up short on the certainty or feel they do not have the ability to move into administrative jobs. Along these lines, you ought to give administrative preparing and backing from the start to urge more possibility to go after these jobs. In the event that you receive these procedures in entire or to a limited extent, you ought to have the option to expand the stream and scope of inner candidates for your administrative jobs. Id love to get notification from individuals who are hesitant to move into the board and why that is. Id likewise prefer to get notification from administrators who have had the option to urge hesitant chiefs to move into the board jobs and how they accomplished that!

I frequently talk to my contacts, as I construct a relationship with them (and obviously away from work as well), concerning what my elective profession would have been had I not unearthed an irregular advert in The Grocer that pivotal day in October 1998, which drove me to the R2R (who put me into my first job) thus history tells the rest. Indeed, I get it depends what day you ask me : I could have been: I figure I could have been an attorney. All things considered, a great deal of the abilities I utilize could be equivalent tuning in, arranging, convincing, pushing if just I had invested more energy at my A levels! I was bound for this profession way and most days I am really assuaged I neglected to get the evaluations I expected to do law (a lot to the ghastliness of my folks who had financed me through tuition based school for 7 yrs, gracious dear!)so, possibly not. I ought to have been: Any individual who realizes me actually will concur with this. I ought to have been a legislator or open speaker or some likeness thereof. Give me a mouthpiece and a crowd of people and I am in my component. I believe that you must be so sure as a selection representative, putting yourself out there regardless of whether it's cold pitching, testing customers, to giving terrible news to applicants I think you lose your hindrances before long (in the event that you had any in any case I didn't!) Trouble is, I never realize when to stop simply ask the hecklers at my ongoing marital promise reestablishments (the most exceedingly awful offenders were my own dad and dear spouse huh!) I needed to be: Clearly Wonder Woman! Which young lady (conceived during the 70s) didn't need her stunning outfit (and figure!) and to have super powers? Having been in R2R for 10 yrs now, some would state I do have super powers in spite of the fact that I haven't made sense of yet how to bounce as high as her.or fly. I could in any case be: A gathering organizer! I knowdon't giggle, however by and by, I think it utilizes fundamentally the same as aptitudes to enrollment. Association, arranging, arranging, targets and objectives. What's more, let's be honest if alcohol and fun is included in what capacity can it NOT be a decent vocation decision?! (In spite of the fact that it is just fun in the event that it is your OWN gathering, so we can forget about that one as well) We could all be: Intermediaries. I have said it for a considerable length of time. Set up a dating organization similarly you maintain an enrollment conference all the gatherings included up close and personal and coordinating up on character and nature and clearly that is a triumphant recipe? But, what has halted me? Matters of the heart are so close to home and dependent on one scene numerous moons back where I attempted to play Cupid and it finished in all out awfulness (he was a right, guess what). Be that as it may, I have the strength! So perhaps we could set up Qui Cupid Services? 3 So now over to you what might your change personality vocation be? Have you perused my elective profession goals and thought, no chance, I would be a pilot, marriage retailer, creator? So how about we see whether it is typical or would it be advisable for me to adhere to the normal everyday employment rather than the fantasy? We specialize in Marketing, Sales, Finance, Administration, Customer Service and Technical Writing recruitment and are currently expanding into Executive and Hi-tech placements too. 3) What do you typically do upon receiving a candidate's resume? We ask all candidates to apply for specific vacancies advertised on our website (all vacancies are listed) to ensure that we recruit for suitable positions for each candidate. Once we receive a CV in reference to an open vacancy we reply as soon as possible with an invitation to register with the relevant consultant here at Marksman or we send a rejection email asking prospective candidates to keep looking at our website in the future. Once we have registered that candidate we can start to talk to them about specific vacancies and hopefully start sending their CV forward to our clients. 4) How important is a candidate's level of Hebrew for you? It depends on the position and we do have a lot of vacancies that don't require any Hebrew at all. However, I always recommend that my candidates continue to improve their Hebrew (if they don't already have a high level) because it improves their employment options as well as their integration in Israeli society. 5) If I live outside Israel and am planning on moving here, when should I first contact you? Once you are living in Israel with an ID (teudat zehut) or unrestricted work permit. Marksman's policy is to meet all candidates before sending them forward to clients (incidentally we try to meet all our clients too). 6) Can you name one of your pet peeves as a recruiter in Israel? The reluctance of employers to discuss salaries at the initial recruitment stage, it is almost impossible to find a suitable candidate without the guidance of a salary range. 7) What can job seekers do to make it easier for you to find them a job? Check your CVs before sending them, a CV is your main marketing tool, it's surprising how many candidates don't use spell check. Make sure that you meet the requirements of the positions that you apply for, they come from our clients not from us. Learn Hebrew if you don't speak already. Keep checking our website and remember that Marksman wants to find you employment; we only reject CVs when they are unsuitable, it's not a personal choice! 8) What do you think of the Open Letter to the Recruiters of the World From Job Seekers Everywhere? As the article says, we are all job seekers so obviously I understand the frustration. In general, I reply to all applications, unfortunately we are not technologically supported enough to offer a search and match facility for all applications at this point. Omitting the request for that service from recruiters I would definitely add my name to the end of that letter! Recruitment consultants are often in the same position as job seekers, waiting for recruiters to respond with the added frustration of unhappy candidates to answer to on the other end. 9) What's the weirdest tactic that worked on getting you to notice a candidate? In all honesty, 5 years in Recruitment and nothing really out of the ordinary so far… 10) What is the best way to contact you, whether as a candidate or as an employer? I prefer to talk to candidates and employers over the phone, however that's not always possible. Email is a foolproof way of getting a response. (Although I meet with all my employers and candidates in person before I start working with them) Thanks for your time, Anna. You can reach Anna and the others at Marksman via their website at www.marksman.co.il. If you liked this article, you'll enjoy 7 Questions with Sally Shiff, Recruiter for Nisha Global. Let Jobs Magnetically Come to Your Personal Brand 4 New Solutions - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Let Jobs Magnetically Come to Your Personal Brand 4 New Solutions - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career The job and career development sites just keep getting better. Ive been speaking of the goal of personal branding for a while now and my prayers have finally been answered, or so I hope. Basically, the end result of personal brand management is recruitment based on your brand. Instead of proactively searching for jobs, your visibility will magnetically attract employers to you. If you have experienced a success story relating to how building an online brand has secured you a job, please email me and I may use it as a case study for my new book (still top secret). Aside from constructing a blog and participating in various social networks, here are 4 solutions for attracting employers to your brand effortlessly: NotchUp : To me, this website is genius and I wish I would have thought of it a while ago, with my knowledge of personal branding and my various theories. Anyways, you get to set a price, relative to the total value of your personal brand, for major companies such as Google to interview you. They have a calculator to help you set a price and I used it and came up with over $2,000. That being said, if you have 1 5-20 years of experience in a specific industry, you could charge a lot more. NotchUp is in private beta right now, but if you email me, Ill send you a VIP invitation! _ JobFox: The mind behind Careerbuilder.com is back and with a vengeance. Rob McGovern has transitioned from his old company and started JobFox. JobFox has a few features that make it stand out from the crowd. First, you can have a private profile, so your current employer cant see your activity and you can attach a resume and follow leads through your cell phone. It also has a tool where you can map out your strengths for employers to see what youre interested in. _ Jobs in Pods: Chris Russell does it again. When I first started blogging, Chris was there to support me and has ever since. Its hard to even track how fast Chris moves, from his blogs, such as Recruiting Fly, Blog for Jobs, and of course Secrets of the Job Hunt. His current project has really gotten my attention. He has taken recruitment to the airwaves with Jobs in Pods. Basically, top employers such as ATT talk about what its like to work in a position they are hiring for. Its a personal touch and you can apply for the job if youre interested. _ Standout Jobs: Ben Yiskovitz is another person who Ive watched for a while now, with his Instigator Blog. You can learn a lot about a companies, with corporate pages that show videos of what its like to work there and it lets you subscribe to company news. The big differentiator is that you can interact with companies through comments. I see this as being a resource for a job seeker that wants to shop before buying.

Cheaper - Career Pivot

Reader Mailbag - All They Want to Hire is Younger/Cheaper - Career Pivot All They Want to Hire is Younger/Cheaper This is the fifth ina series called Mailbag, wherein I respond to readers’ questions regardingcareer issues. This month, we have a question abouthow to deal properly when hiring managers or the higher-ups just want to make offers to younger/cheaper candidates. Marc, The hiring manager (or perhaps forced by the higher-ups) is looking for younger and cheaperâ€"how can we Boomers get around that scenario? My experience and education are in non-profit management. I have had multiple interviews, but I haven’t been able to land an offer. Sara Sara, I want you to think like a negotiator whose aim is to get the best deal. In order to do that, you need to understand what the hiring manager’s real issues are. This has to start from the very beginning of the interview process by asking a lot of probing questions. Read the following post, Probing for Pain Points in an Interviewto learn more about probing questions. Your questions should be open-ended, which mean they cannot be answered simply with a yes or no. Read the following post, Questions That Power The Negotiator Job Searchon how to construct open-ended questions. One of my favorite questions for the hiring manager is: What keeps you up at night? If you can get the hiring manager tospill the beans, you can then position yourself to sell your real value. If they are looking for someone who is younger/cheaper, then you will need to sell them that you not only can do more but that you are worth it. I spell out this process in the Negotiator Job Search series. Marc Marc, I am a former Chief Marketing Officer for a healthcare company.I have now been out of work for one year and am looking at both finding a new marketing position as well as the potential of starting a new business. Do you have any advice? Dominic I spoke with Dominic and found out that: He had been very highly compensated The portion of the healthcare industry he worked in is currently in a high degree of flux Age was a factor Dominic, Given your level of compensation, it does not surprise me that a year has gone by and you have not yet landed a new job. A goodrule of thumbis you may have to wait one month for every $10,000 of salary until you find the right thing. This may only be arule of thumb, but you also have to remember that there are very few jobs in the country at your former salary level. Even though you say you will take less, no one will believe you. If you want to find a J-O-B, you will likely need to “date” to get a job.Start a consulting business. Yes, you will need to form a company. Then consult for companies that are capable of hiring you. You can read more about this process in my post, 3 Ways to Date to Get a Job. Many people in your shoes say, “I do not want to be a consultant.” You have to look at it as a means to an end. If you want to start a business, there are three directions you could take. Buy a business. Find a good business broker and explore whether purchasing an established business makes sense. I encourage you to find agood business broker. This is someone with a good track record who understands business valuations. Buy a franchise. Contact a franchise representative from either Entrepreneur Source or Frannet. You may have todatea severalof these representatives to find one you like. Do not make the franchising decision on your own. Start your own business. Start by contacting yourlocal Small Business Development Center for help. These centers are funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and are FREE! Whether you want to work for someone else or work for yourself, the road will likely lead to some form of entrepreneurship. It might be short-term indating to get a jobor long-term in running your own business. I hope that helps, but at your age and salary level, you have a big mountain to climb. Oh, by the way, there are a lot of others just like you. Private equity firms are buying up small to medium size businesses, ejecting the entire C-Suite (CEO, CFO, CTO, CMO, COO.., ) and bringing in their own people. You are not alone! There are a lot of people just like you. Marc Miller Like what you just read? Share it with your friends using the buttons above. Like What You Read? Get Career Pivot Insights! Why You Should Be Concerned About Data Privacy If You Work In Business - Sterling Career Concepts

Why You Should Be Concerned About Data Privacy If You Work In Business Why You Should Be Concerned About Data Privacy If You Work In Business For many of us, data privacy isn’t the first thing we think of when we wake up in the morning. For those of us working in the business industry, however, we may want to rethink this. Caring about the way we protect the data of ourselves, our company, and our clients are vital and also lawful. Information privacy laws were enacted to prohibit information on private individuals from being either disclosed or misused. Because these laws are only partially regulated in the U.S., many concerns still arise when it comes to protecting an individuals data in the 21st century. Certain industries such as the healthcare and financial sectors have higher regulations set in place, whereas data transmitted in business is oftentimes more freely managed. Your employer likely has guidelines set in place to help follow this act, however, it’s up to you to fully ensure that you are protecting your own devices and files to the best of your abilities. When it comes to protecting your personal data, there are many things to keep in mind, particularly in the workplace. The most important thing you can do for yourself is to always take precautions with your digital activities both online and off. Do Not Overshare Refrain from sending sensitive information in emails or online chat rooms with other coworkers, even if you have a trustworthy relationship with the recipient(s). It’s very important to be cautious of the information you are sharing and who you are sharing it with. Should someone intercept your message, you wouldn’t want it to get into the wrong hands. Many of the data breaches that companies face each year occur because of a weakened access point in an employee’s device. Criminals who gain access to this will use the data to extort, spam, hack or steal your identity. What you should avoid sharing at work: Personally Identifiable Information (PII) Location Data Financial Information Passwords Social Profiles Be Aware of Scams Unfortunately, scams happen in businesses daily. They can be extremely costly for employees, employers, and clients. Cybercriminals often use phishing emails as a way to access the network and gain the data that they need to commit an identity theft related crime or extortion. Carefully review any email that you receive which seems out of the ordinary. Criminals have found creative ways to make an email look like it’s coming from an internal employee. These are known as phishing emails. They will typically ask for sensitive information, so always verify any questionable emails with your IT staff before responding. Create Strong Passwords The first step to keeping cyber criminals from accessing your personal data is to prevent them from accessing your devices and accounts in the first place. Practice strong password hygiene and update your passwords regularly. The password that you use at work should never be the same as any that you use for personal accounts/devices. It needs to be strong, unique, and a mixture of numbers, letters and if possible symbols. If an account or device offers two-factor authentication, take advantage of it. This provides an extra layer of protection and peace of mind. With this setting, if someone other than yourself tries to access your account, you will be asked to verify the login attempt with a security code to prove that it was you. Protect Your Devices For any device that you use for work, it’s important to equip it with the proper software. This goes for laptops, mobile phones, and tablets. They all have their own unique needs for protection but it’s important to make sure that your company provides these resources to you. Having an antivirus program installed on your laptop will help to keep viruses, malware, and other harmful downloads from gaining access to your device. If you work from home at all, you will need to ensure that your home network is secure enough to operate your work functions on. If you are unsure or may be working in a public space, especially when traveling, you should consider a virtual private network to operate on. This will encrypt your data by changing your IP address, therefore helping you keep criminals away. It’s also important to update this software and any applications you may use regularly. Typically, new updates for the programs on your devices are released every so often to increase the se curity of the program. Therefore, it’s important to make sure you are operating on the latest version. Use Common Sense When you walk away from your device at work, lock it. Whether you put it to sleep or completely close it you don’t need anyone reading your screen while you are away. If you travel for work, make sure to invest in a lock and utilize the safety in your hotel room for your devices when you leave the room. Backup Data Annually on March 31st, World Backup Day is hosted as a way to remind individuals everywhere and of every profession to take time out of their day to back up their devices. It’s a simple thing that many of us forget to do, yet it’s quite important. Should you ever have your device crash or a virus takeover, you’ll want to have a backup of all of your important files, photos, and documents. Remember that although your employer and IT department work hard to ensure that you are safe online, when it comes to data protection it’s ultimately up to you. You are the one who needs to ensure your information doesn’t end up in the hands of a criminal or even a competitor.
